People with anxiety disorders often struggle to deal with their condition however, it is also difficult for parents, friends and family of the sufferers to cope with all this. If you yourself do not have an anxiety disorder, it may be difficult to understand another person, and yet you must still offer full support. Here are some methods you can deal with a friend or family member that has an anxiety disorder.

First, learn all you can about anxiety disorders and your loved one’s specific condition. Often times these parents or friends or loved ones may not be anxiety attack sufferers. This can make it difficult to understand what the loved one is going through especially as you want to help. What follows are a few ways to deal with a friend or member of your family dealing with an anxiety disorder.

It helps to begin with some research to gather as much information to have a better understanding of their condition. Anxiety attacks go from the slight to the severe. There is no one thing that causes it. The information you are looking for could simply be at your fingertips if you have an internet connection. You can speak to medical practitioners or even subscribe to professional magazines or articles on the subject. Another great and well known resource is of course the library. Having a better understanding of the causes of their anxiety attack condition and a likely treatment will better equip you to help a friend or loved one.


Joining support groups is also another great and effective way to deal with a close one’s anxiety disorder. It may be something of a challenge dealing with a support group of people with one anxiety disorder or another but you should make the effort to do this as it will help you have a better understanding and help you cope better too. Look around your area and see what is available. Where you are unable to find one because one does not exist you might want to set one up yourself! The number of people dealing with anxiety disorders and their family’s run into millions and they would certainly benefit from the support you can assist with. You could also make contact with your local community hospital or center so that you can find out if there is already a support group in your area.

Be aware that either dealing with or helping a person with any sort of medical or mental health condition can be both physically and emotionally draining. Do not be afraid to speak to your own medical doctor as they will no doubt have some words of advice to help you cope and help someone with anxiety disorder.

Make maintaining your own health top priority since it stands to reason that if you are mentally and physically well you will be in a stronger position to help someone who is not well. You will also be able to cope better with the changing and difficult times this person is or will go through.
